Connor McDavid

Connor McDavid, or Connor Andrew McDavid, was born in Canada on January 13, 1997.

Connor McDavid plays center for the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League (NHL) and is the team’s captain.

In the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, he was the first player picked by the Oilers.


McDavid, born in Richmond, Canada, started skating when Connor McDavid was three and played hockey when he was four. Children needed to be at least five years old before they could play hockey. However, McDavid’s parents told everyone he was much older than he was.

McDavid joined a hockey club in the neighboring town of Aurora when Connor McDavid was just six years old since the hockey organization in his hometown of Newmarket would not let him play in more senior age divisions than his own.

McDavid, being a youngster, competed at Aurora against opponents as old as nine years old. After that, McDavid joined the York-Simcoe Express, an Aurora-based club.

McDavid helped the York-Simcoe Express win four Ontario Minor Hockey Association titles while playing for the team that his father coached. McDavid’s father was the team’s head coach.

McDavid played for the York-Simcoe Express in the OMHA minor ice hockey competition. The 2009 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament included McDavid. McDavid joined the GTHL’s Toronto Malboros in 2011.

Connor McDavid was named GTHL player of the year in 2011–12 while playing with the Toronto Malboros. McDavid is just the third player in Hockey Canada’s history to be named an Excellent Player.

McDavid won the Bobby Smith Trophy for OHL Scholastic Player of the Year and the William Hanley Trophy for sportsmanship in 2013–14. McDavid was named OHL Second All-Star.

McDavid became Erie Otters, captain before the 2014–15 season. McDavid started the season well. His hand injury sidelined him for six weeks. Connor McDavid represented Canada in the 2015 World Junior Championship after his return. Oshawa defeated the Erie Otters in five games in the playoffs.
