Despite this, MacKinnon spent draft day skating with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) as he was thinking about playing collegiate ice hockey in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or significant junior ice hockey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

The Baie-Comeau Drakkar selected MacKinnon with the first overall pick in the 2011 QMJHL Draft, which took place on June 4. Nathan Mackinnon led the Mooseheads to their first Memorial Cup triumph on May 26, 2013.

He was also voted Tournament MVP after scoring a tournament-high seven goals and six assists in four games, and he was named to the Tournament All-Star Team.

Despite widespread speculation that the Colorado Avalanche would select defenseman Seth Jones, who grew up in Denver, Colorado, as the first overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, head coach Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche stated publicly on June 24, 2013, that his team would select MacKinnon if the draft were held at that time.

“It would be tough for us not to take MacKinnon,” Roy said to ESPN The Magazine. Roy also declined to rule out the possibility of moving the choice.
