Sergio Perez Professional Career

Sauber (2011-2012)

Sauber revealed that Perez would be driving for the team with Kamui Kobayashi, and this was the big break he had been waiting for in Formula One.

In contrast to the rest of the field, which pitted themselves many times throughout the competition, he took only one pit stop en route to the seventh-place result in his debut race in Australia.

However, the outcome of the race was overturned since both of the Sauber drivers were penalized for a technical violation and kicked out of the competition.

Perez would get his first point of the season when the race in Spain ended up finishing ninth. He had to wait until then. In his rookie season, Perez made a strong impression by demonstrating practical tire management skills and scoring critical points for the squad.

With 14 points to his name, he would end the year in the sixteenth position on the leaderboard.

Perez’s breakout season occurred in 2012, and it was a successful one. It all started when he finished on the podium in Malaysia, which was just the second race of the season and the first time he challenged Fernando Alonso for the win.

Most of the time, Perez was able to turn his ordinary qualifying positions into fantastic results by preserving the tire performance and using his expertise in tire management to their full potential.

This was something that he did throughout the entire season. In 2012, he would add two more podium finishes to his record in Canada and Monza, finishing the season in tenth position overall.

Canada and Monza were both in Italy.

Perez’s on-track exploits managed to grab Martin Whitmarsh’s attention at McLaren, who ultimately decided to recruit Perez as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement for the 2013 season.

Force India(2014-2018)

In 2014, Perez joined Force India to prove the critics wrong. He was competitive with Hulkenberg throughout the season, driving a midfield vehicle. Perez secured the team’s first podium finish since 2009 in Bahrain.

On the other hand, Perez changed the tables in 2015, finishing the season 20 points ahead of Hulkenberg and taking another podium for the team at the Russian Grand Prix.

During this time, Perez was establishing himself as one of the most dependable drivers on the grid.

Perez improved much further in 2016, finishing on the podium twice in a difficult season for Force India. Perez picked up two stages for the team and created a clear lead over teammate Nico Hulkenberg in the intra-team duel by using his tire management expertise in Monaco and sheer pace in Azerbaijan.

He finished the season in seventh place, about 30 points ahead of Hulkenberg.

Perez welcomed a new colleague at Force India, Esteban Ocon, a young driver with a lot of excitement, for the 2017 season. Perez would establish early dominance over the teenager.

Still, Ocon would close the distance, and the two would encounter in Baku, where Perez believed he might have challenged for victory.

The two teammates would clash again at the Belgian Grand Prix, and the team would not allow the two drivers to race against each other.

In terms of pace, Perez and Ocon would spend the entire season quite close to each other. Perez finished the season in seventh place, just ahead of his young teammate.

Perez was the only non-Mercedes-Ferrari-Red Bull driver to finish on the podium in the 2018 season, finishing third in Baku. Midway through the 2018 season, the Force India team was also under administration.

The team’s assets were purchased and renamed “Racing Point Force India.”

The team kept Perez while dropping Esteban Ocon in favor of Lance Stroll. Perez finished the season in eighth place in the rankings.
